Ökologisches Wirtschaften: Special Issue „Social Entrepreneurship“

01.02.2010

This issue of «Ökologisches Wirtschaften» focuses on a specific group of actors addressing societal change: So-called "social entrepreneurs" work on pressing societal problems with the help of entrepreneurial means. Innovative and systemic approaches are expected / intended to contribute to achieving social and ecological goals – making financial viability possible at the same time.

Articles by renowned authors highlight various aspects and new scientific approaches as well as some best practice examples of social entrepreneurship. The underlying question regards the potential contribution of social entrepreneurs to sustainable development.

The literature on social entrepreneurship, and hence the possible teaching materials, are still limited, in particular in languages other than English. Thus, this special issue first appeared in German (in Ökologisches Wirtschaften 2/2009, oekom verlag) to address this gap for a German speaking audience. Following the publication of the German issue in June 2009, these articles are now available to a wider English speaking audience.

The editors are members of the research group “Getting Things Done Sustainably” (GETIDOS) of the University of Greifswald and the Institute for Ecological Economy Research. GETIDOS is a project funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the framework of social-ecological research. From 2009 through 2013, GETIDOS will investigate the potential contribution of social entrepreneurship to sustainable development in the water sector.
