In 1985, a dedicated group of scientists seeking solutions to the industrial growth dilemma founded both an independent research institute and an association in Berlin: the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW) and the Association for Ecological Economy Research (VÖW).
Since then, we at IÖW have conducted over 700 research projects, exploring how social and ecological change can be achieved.
Now, in 2025, IÖW celebrates its 40th anniversary. Environmental, climate, and sustainability movements face significant challenges, as do the democracies in many countries. A quarter of the crucial 21st century for humanity has passed.
The world has changed. The present is uncertain, and resistance is rising. As we mark our 40th anniversary, we do so in turbulent times. What new approaches are necessary to push transformations forward? How can independent sustainability research evolve to meet today’s demands? And how can we use our research to help strengthen democracy?
A good life for all, alongside economic activities that respect planetary boundaries – this is a vision we believe is achievable, and it can be realized more effectively than it is today. For 40 years, identifying solutions, pathways, and visions has been our expertise. We continue to dig deep and invite fellow change-makers to join us in thinking critically, debating passionately, exploring boldly, and experimenting together during this milestone year. We remain on our quest, always searching, always scouting. Join us in this journey. >> Read on…
