In 1985, a group of scientists searching for alternatives to the industrial growth dilemma founded an independent research institute and an association in Berlin: the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW) and the Association for Ecological Economy Research (VÖW).

Since then, we at IÖW have carried out over 700 research projects, exploring how social and ecological transformation can succeed and providing decision-makers in politics, business, and civil society with concrete recommendations.

Now, in 2025, IÖW turns 40.

Yet environmental, climate, and sustainability movements are facing increasing resistance – just as democracies in many countries are under pressure. A quarter of the pivotal 21st century has already passed.

Now what?

The world has changed. The present is uncertain, and opposition is growing. We celebrate our 40th anniversary in turbulent times. What new approaches are needed to drive transformation forward? What should independent sustainability research do differently? How can we use our expertise to help strengthen democracy?

Our research gives us confidence: humanity can achieve a good and just life – together and in harmony with nature. We want to share this confidence and inspire even more people. Because a sustainable and just society needs people who believe in change.

Creating a desire for change

40 years – time to reflect. What paths have we taken in four decades that are worth expanding or rethinking? How can we reach and motivate more people beyond our existing networks? As we enter our fifth decade as a third-party-funded institute, we want to stay agile, take fresh research approaches, and continue evolving as an organization. We see this as essential for inspiring society to embrace transformation.
