Man-made climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Effective climate mitigation and adaptation to unavoidable climate change impacts are becoming a task of survival. In addition to technologies and capital for the transformation of our infrastructure, economy and way of life, successful strategies require the participation of various stakeholders and a fair distribution of costs and benefits.
The IÖW develops, analyzes and evaluates political strategies and instruments as well as concepts and concrete measures for climate mitigation and adaptation and examines corresponding technologies. In addition to greenhouse gas impacts, we analyze numerous other sustainability effects and conflicting goals in implementation. Using inter- and transdisciplinary research methods, we involve citizens and stakeholders from local and regional administration, companies, civil society and business associations.
We work with established standards and innovative methods and assess emissions and energy consumption. To this end, we use or develop quantitative and qualitative models to depict correlations in scenarios. When developing measures, we focus on renewable and nature-based solutions. We investigate and, where possible, quantify and evaluate their effects in monetary terms.
Among other things, we develop climate mitigation scenarios for municipalities, analyze the prerequisites and effects of CO2 removal technologies or design and examine building blocks, targets and measures for adaptation strategies. In the field of climate mitigation and adaptation, we make significant contributions to policy at federal and state level, for example in Berlin and Brandenburg, as well as for municipalities.
