Energy transition

The energy transition is essential to protect the climate and to move away from nuclear power as a risk technology. It is not only necessary to decarbonize energy generation, but also to transform the entire energy system. This requires switching energy generation to renewable energies and reducing energy consumption through efficient and sufficient behavior. Different energy sources and sectors must be linked together. Digital technologies support greater decentralization, although requirements for the resilience of the energy system must be considered at the same time. The transformation of the energy system has a significant impact on society and inevitably raises questions of social justice.

The IÖW is investigating how new technologies can accelerate the transformation in the heating, electricity and mobility sectors and which social framework conditions support sustainable development. It is important for us to contribute to the development of innovative business and financing models to strengthen regional value creation and the participation of municipalities and citizens. Opportunities for the local population to participate fairly are key to democratizing the energy system and gaining acceptance for energy transition measures.

We conduct interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research on topics such as energy communities, neighborhood solutions and integrated energy and climate protection concepts. We focus on the key players for a socio-ecological change in the energy system and develop knowledge on orientation and action with them and for them.
