To achieve the 1.5 degree Celsius target set in the Paris Climate Agreement, a total coal phase-out is needed. The withdrawal from the use of lignite is connected with structural changes, which will also cause a loss of jobs within the affected industries. However, the energy transition offers potential for value added and employment effects. In a brief study on behalf of Greenpeace Energy, the IÖW analyzed economic effects through the expansion of renewable energies until the year 2030. The results of this study were presented by Prof. Bernd Hirschl (IÖW) on the the Solar plus press conference.
