First and next generation biofuels
New technologies are becoming more and more important not at least for economic development as well as for the environment. The scientific debate about sustainable consumption patterns has largely a blind spot with regard to new technologies. In this presentation, problems of sustainable consumption and production with regard to currently available, ‘low-tech’ first generation biofuels as well as the prospects for future, next generation biofuels based on advanced biotechnologies such as genetic engineering are discussed. Furthermore, it tries to point out the challenges to sustainable production and consumption an increased deployment of next generation biofuels could imply.
