What can and must Berlin do to become climate neutral? In his lecture, Prof. Dr. Bernd Hirschl explains how the German capital can achieve climate neutrality as quickly as possible in order to comply with the Paris Climate Protection Agreement. The aim is to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.
He first used current CO2 trends in Berlin to show that Berlin's climate policy is falling well short of current and future targets. He then presented the methodology of the study, which was used to develop three independent target scenarios for a climate-neutral Berlin by 2050, 2040 and 2030. A central component of the study are restrictions that would make climate neutrality impossible by 2030 – and measures that address these as a priority. According to Hirschl, a new, comprehensive climate governance architecture is the central lever for confronting problems in all sectors and departments.
The presentation took place as part of the Berlin Climate Citizens' Council's opinion-forming process and is publicly available as a video on YouTube.
