After almost two years of intensive work, including a participatory process, project manager Prof. Bernd Hirschl has handed over the comprehensive report on the Brandenburg Climate Plan to Climate Protection Minister Axel Vogel. Prof. Hirschl then presented key findings and recommendations to the Committee for Agriculture, Environment and Climate Protection of the Brandenburg State Parliament.
The almost 500-page report contains recommendations for a Brandenburg climate protection strategy and proposed measures for the state's climate plan.
With the measures in the climate plan, the state should make its contribution to achieving the interim and sector targets for greenhouse gas savings in areas such as agriculture and forestry, energy and industry, transport and construction adopted by the cabinet in August 2022.
The lecture presents key findings of the report, including firstly the trend analysis, which underlines that Brandenburg is still a long way from climate neutrality and that there is therefore great pressure to act. The most important recommendations for action include phasing out coal as quickly as possible, but also the heating and transport transition, the conversion to a climate-neutral economy, the strengthening of forests and the rewetting of peatlands used for agriculture. In addition, consistent political implementation and management as well as the provision of sufficient financial resources and personnel at state and municipal level will be essential.
