The “Industry meets Renewables” conference series, which took place as part of the HUSUM WIND trade fair, addressed the topic of “Regions on the path to transformation” on the opening day. Prof. Hirschl was invited to prepare the ground for the political opening panel with a keynote speech from the scientific side with the Energy Transition Minister from Schleswig-Holstein, Tobias Goldschmidt.
In his presentation, Prof. Hirschl outlined the current status of the key issues and challenges of the energy transition and described various proposed solutions in the form of theses. He emphasized that the climate crisis must be managed similarly to the corona crisis or the current Ukraine crisis: a turnaround and a "whatever it takes" attitude are also needed here.
One prerequisite for this is greater consideration, facilitation, and promotion of the energy transition locally in all regions. Local impetus must also play a fundamental role in the current debate on reforming the electricity market design: local “use instead of curtailment” of renewable electricity must be made possible – as well as regionally distributed RE expansion and a fairer and dynamic distribution of grid fees. This would lead to more value creation and acceptance locally and also increase the resilience of the overall system.
These aspects were discussed in the subsequent panel debate with Minister Goldschmidt, the CEO of GP JOULE, Ove Petersen, and the Vice President of the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Knud Hansen.
