Presentation Urban Energy Transition – Status quo and Future

Congress: dena Energiekongress
Event by: Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (dena)
20.11.17 - 21.11.17, Berlin

In his talk within the context of the module “Integrated and diverse: Municipalities as drivers of the energy transition”, Professor Bernd Hirschl concentrated on the urban energy transition. The Paris climate agreement implies far-reaching consequences for cities. As they are responsible for a majority of global greenhouse gas emissions, they are also accountable for reducing them. Cities are increasingly aware of their climate protection potentials and present themselves as political actors on the international level. Urban spaces present a number of specific potentials for the energy transition (e.g. use of cogeneration plants, urban solar energy). In order to expand those potentials and reduce rebound effects, Professor Hirschl stresses the need for state specific support at the federal and municipal level.
