Presentation Vulnerability and Resilience of the ICT-Electricity-System

Conference: ITAFORUM 2017 (Jahresveranstaltung Innovations- und Technikanalyse)
Event by: Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung
06.10.17, Berlin

In his talk, Professor Bernd Hirschl presents the research project “Electricity resilience”. He discusses the security issues that arise out of the growing interconnection of the electricity system on the one hand and information and communication technology (ICT) on the other (e.g. cyber-attacks). By means of vulnerability analysis for centralized and decentralized electricity system architectures and expert interviews, the researchers have developed different strategies of how to render the electricity system more resilient. In their results, it becomes clear that electricity systems are very vulnerable due to a number of different factors, and that these effects are even more pronounced in centralized systems. This issue should be taken up by the German government, as well as approached in a practical way by autonomous technologies.
