Designetz: A Modular Concept for the Energy Transition From Isolated Solutions to an Efficient Energy System of the Future

The ‘Designetz’ showcase spans North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and the Saarland. It aims to supply solar and wind energy to urban and industrial consumers. For this purpose numerous demonstration projects are implemented, which will give the energy system of the future a more flexible structure. Designetz is one of five model regions funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in the programme "Smart Energy Showcases – Digital Agenda for the Energy Transition" (SINTEG) to examine innovative technologies and procedures for an intelligent energy supply for the future.

One of the goals of Designetz is to develop user-friendly business models, which contribute to more flexibility in the energy system. The work of the IÖW in this project is to evaluate the different possibilities for more flexibility, e.g. Power-To-Heat or storage options, together with the users. In this way difficulties and obstacles related to the use of these options are identified. This can concern factors like economic, technical and operational efficiency, usability, regulatory framework, sustainability or data security. The knowledge gained is used to work out recommendations for the design of business models.
