Environmental Awareness in Germany 2024 Representative survey on environmental awareness and environmental behavior in 2024 including scientific analyses

The Environmental Awareness Study by the German Environmental Agency (UBA) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) has been surveying environmental awareness in Germany every two years since 1996 in a representative population survey. Citizens are asked to assess the state of the environment, their personal environmentally relevant behavior, and their attitudes and opinions on environmental and climate protection. The aim is to identify and understand prevailing patterns of thought and action in society, covering both long-term developments and emerging phenomena in equal measure. The results are used to derive recommendations for environmental policy decisions.

The Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW), which has already conducted several previous environmental awareness studies, was commissioned to carry out the Environmental Awareness Study 2024. The study will continue the existing time series of environmental awareness and environmental behavior and thus survey environmental awareness and environmental behavior in Germany in a representative manner. Furthermore, questions are asked and analyzed on a key topic. In the Environmental Awareness Study 2024, this is the topic of environment, health and quality of life, analyzing how health and quality of life are related to environmental quality.

Several focus groups and two additional surveys accompany the main survey in order to deepen the knowledge gained. At the end of the study, an expert event will be held at which the research team and the commissioning parties will discuss the results with scientific experts in the field.
