There are many alternative economy actors that primarily pursue socio-ecological or public welfare objectives. They include, for example, social enterprises, citizens' cooperatives, collective enterprises and organizations of the solidarity economy. They operate differently from conventional enterprises, for example in their organizational forms, ownership structures, use of profits or innovation strategies. They are active in a wide range of fields: energy transition, organic farming, neighborhood support or the inclusion of disadvantaged groups. Consequently, they are of strategic importance in addressing social and environmental challenges.
How can the field of alternative economy enterprises be defined and characterized in its diversity? How can the social and economic relevance of the alternative economy be demonstrated? The IÖW is investigating these questions for the state of Bremen. The aim of the study is to improve the understanding of alternative economy forms, to make them more visible and to highlight their socio-ecological contributions. To this end, the IÖW collects economic data on these actors, including economic indicators such as sectoral affiliation as well as social impacts and transformation potential. The empirical research consists of a company survey and accompanying qualitative interviews with experts. The results are intended to support the long-term promotion of alternative economy actors.
The IÖW has already carried out a similar study for the alternative economy in Berlin.
