Sustainable urban mobility in Europe and North America NUMEN

The NUMEN project aims to collaborate with North American partners to develop research approaches focused on strategies for sustainable urban mobility that reduce car dependency in cities and promote sustainable alternatives.

This networking and exploratory initiative builds on the project ”Policy Mix 4 Mobility”. This project, part of the European Union’s “Driving Urban Transitions (DUT)“ program, examines policy mixes, political strategies, and institutional, procedural, and social innovations for a transition in urban mobility. In addition to the goal of climate neutrality, the project aims to simultaneously ensure social inclusion and equity in urban areas.

The NUMEN project builds on the approach and results of this DUT project, which focuses on Europe, with the aim of using this foundation to initiate joint externally funded research with North American partners. In this way, the European approach is to be internationalized. Strategies for sustainable urban mobility and their implementation address a global problem. Therefore, joint research with North American scientists on this topic is promising and has the potential to attract significant global interest.

On the one hand, NUMEN will supplement the planned dissemination of the preliminary results of the DUT project with additional activities. On the other hand, the aim is to facilitate new research collaborations between the IÖW and Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, as well as potentially other North American partners, through a joint application for research funding. Plans include two visits by participating IÖW researchers to Carleton University, as well as a joint workshop with North American colleagues on the topic of sustainable mobility.
