Water Flows in Germany

The website www.bmbf.wasserfluesse.de presents interactive graphics and films on Water Flows in Germany.

The aim of the research project is to capture the water flows in Germany in an integrative analysis and in innovative ways. "Water flows" in this sense mean not only the hydrological processes related to natural and artificial watercourses. The project answers the question how much water flows into the natural, economic, and social area of Germany, how and by whom the water is used in whichways, how and in which quantities water leaves the country.  Included are natural precipitation, the tributaries of surface water and groundwater flows, but also the indirect imports of virtual water via the import of goods, when water was used for their production abroad.
