A Case-Study Approach to Quantifying Indirect Land-Use Change due to Expanding Biofuels Feedstock Cultivation

The book presents an new case-study approach to quantifying indirect land-use change (ILUC) that has been applied to three case-studies: sugarcane ethanol production in specific regions of Malawi, and Brazil and wheat ethanol production in Germany. In contrast to most existing models, the new approach allows for consideration of regionally specific conditions and the implementation of compensation measures. Thus, it reflects the ILUC risk of a specific biofuel feedstock expansion more realistically than do exisiting models that do not consider such measures. It might also help to design prospective biofuel projects in a way that ILUC can be avoided or minimized
