The transition of Germany’s energy sector to a renewable-based system is reshaping the roles of numerous energy actors and fostering new forms of multi-actor collaboration. This publication highlights new ways of thinking, doing, and organizing associated with municipal and regional energy transitions, illustrating how these unfold in local transformations. In addition, it offers municipal actors a comprehensive guide on approaching regional energy supply changes in conjunction with social innovation, positioning municipalities at the heart of the energy transition.
This booklet aims to inspire all municipalities to tackle the energy transition with a proactive mindset – encouraging them to set expectations and pursue goals that prioritize common good ambitions. The municipal energy transition is a collective effort between diverse local actors. For municipalities, this means fostering partnerships and collaborations – with civil society, academia, businesses, policymakers, and, above all, with citizens.
