Green City of the Future Climate resilient planning of neighbourhoods, buildings and open spaces

The symposium “Urban resilience: new impulses for practice in cities and neighborhoods” focused on the question of how resilience can be incorporated into the integrated and sustainable development of cities and neighborhoods: A question that also thematized the team of the “Green City of the Future” project in connection with climate change impacts such as heat and heavy rainfall. The specific focus here was on compact urban structures and on preserving and improving green and open spaces, taking them into account in urban planning processes at an early stage and gaining support from urban society. At a “market of opportunities” at the symposium, Johannes Rupp, as project representative, entered into dialogue with the participants via a poster presentation. The poster provides an overview of the partners, objectives, content and methods, as well as selected results of the project.

The project consisted of a three-year research and development phase. Here, planning and competition processes in existing and new neighborhoods were analyzed and monitored, climatic simulations of greenery in the context of densification were created, and population surveys on the perception of heat and formats for activating citizens and companies were evaluated. In the subsequent two-year implementation phase, the project team used the results to identify the needs of the target group and prepared the desired content in a practical way using compact formats.

In five subject areas, 19 fact sheets, checklists, and guidelines as well as presentation slides and a workshop format were created as implementation aids. These aids are freely available at www.gruene-stadt-der-zukunft.de.
