Future visions can be used to initiate discussions about goals, design options and implementation steps on how to develop neighborhoods and buildings in a climate-resilient way at an early stage. Representatives from municipal administration, such as planning departments, as well as independent planners from urban planning and landscape architecture have, through visioning processes, the opportunity to broaden their view on various possible greening options. Future visions promote constructive dialogue between representatives of various specialist departments, project development and housing associations, companies and civil society initiatives. The method is also suitable for dialogues at the start of a participatory planning process.
In the “Green City of the Future” project, the research and practice partners developed a series of future visions for various Munich case studies. Stakeholders from administration, business and civil society in particular were involved. The resulting variants of future visions and final illustrations are available free of charge for own use, see the Flickr album of the project.
The guideline shows representatives of local authorities, such as planning departments and independent planners from the fields of landscape architecture and urban planning, how greening measures can be designed in a participatory way using a visioning process. This takes place in several steps and on the basis of key questions: from process planning to different future vision variants, the exchange and consolidation of preferences, resistance and additions, up to the start of implementation measures.
The website www.gruene-stadt-der-zukunft.de offers further implementation aids to strengthen climate adaptation in planning and municipal administration. The available fact sheets, guidelines and checklists as well as a workshop format support the planning of climate-resilient open spaces, neighborhoods and buildings. In addition, presentation slides (Download PDF, 14 MB, DE) with compactly prepared project results and positive examples from practice offer impulses for gaining the support of decision-makers.
