Climate-resilient neighborhood development requires interdisciplinary co-operation. This is where the exchange between different departments or planning offices is worthwhile. Specifically, this applies to the start of a planning process, for example, when all the specialist departments and experts involved are sitting around the same table or as part of existing formats, such as training courses or working groups of professional associations. Here, a workshop can facilitate mutual learning and promote the exchange of experience – for example, in dealing with conflicting objectives.
In the “Green City of the Future” project, the research and practice partners brought together various stakeholders from administration, business and civil society to discuss the preservation and improvement of urban green spaces. Among others, this enabled to develop solutions for dealing with conflicting objectives.
The handout supports representatives of municipal administration, such as planning, environmental and climate departments and independent urban planners and landscape architects in the preparation and implementation of a low-threshold workshop format. Various thematic approaches and key questions relating to subjects such as construction and buildings, neighborhood development, integration in planning and administration as well as activation and participation are proposed. The handout also includes a set of methods that invite participants to share their experiences and build-up networks. In addition, the handout provides a methodological toolbox in form of methods for the start of the workshop and materials for the working phase.
Further implementation aids for more climate adaptation in planning and municipal administration can be found on the website www.gruene-stadt-der-zukunft.de. The available fact sheets, guidelines, and checklists support the planning of climate-resilient open spaces, neighborhoods and buildings. In addition, presentation slides (Download PDF, 14 MB, DE) with compactly prepared project results and positive examples from practice offer impulses for gaining the support of decision-makers.
