Hydrogen is considered an indispensable energy source for climate-neutral economic systems. At the same time, its environmentally and climate-friendly production is only just beginning worldwide, and infrastructures need to be built and converted, so the question of availability in terms of time, quality and quantity is becoming important. In which sectors can it be used, and in which should it be used – and where not? What requirements must be met for a successful but green market ramp-up? What can international supply and production chains look like that meet high socio-ecological standards? Which political instruments best address all these questions? And how do we deal with the increasingly scarce raw material of drinking water, which must be used for electrolysis processes?
The article introduces the eponymous focus of the specialist journal “Ökologisches Wirtschaften”, in which these questions are addressed in several specialist articles.
