Implementing GBF Target 16 Addressing biodiversity impacts of food consumption

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), adopted in 2022, serves as a critical roadmap for the conservation and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems. Recognizing the urgency of global action, the GBF aims to mobilize efforts at economic, social, and financial levels. It sets forth 19 Targets designed to guide governments and other stakeholders in the implementation of these goals.

This briefing, in particular, focuses on Target 16, which seeks to empower people to make sustainable consumption choices by establishing supportive policies, improving education, and providing access to accurate information and alternatives. By 2030, this target seeks to halve global food waste, significantly reduce overconsumption, and substantially decrease waste generation.

As we approach COP 16 in Cali this October, the first biodiversity COP since the GBF's adoption, this policy brief is intended to provide decision-makers with recommendations for advancing the implementation of these targets. The briefing specifically addresses the significant impact of food consumption on biodiversity and outlines strategies to promote more equitable and sustainable practices. Key recommendations include

  • shifting towards plant-based diets, for example through price incentives
  • reducing food waste across the value chain
  • eliminating harmful subsidies and links to deforestation in food production
  • and enhancing sustainable production measures.
