Importance of socio-economic criteria in water management Conference Paper

Water management is often oriented at hydrological or ecological targets: certain water quantities that should be available or water qualities that should be achieved. But in practical water management, also socio-economic criteria are highly relevant: costs and benefits and their distribution among the different water users that are affected or could be affected by water management options.
The present paper gives an overview on the most relevant socio-economic criteria in water management. It refers to experiences with water management in Germany and Europe and presents the results of the socio-economic analysis within the Joint Chinese-German Project “Overall-effective measures for sustainable water resources management in the coastal area of Shandong Province, PR China.”
