The obligation to offer reusable packaging came into force at the start of 2023. However, the obligation to offer reusable packaging has not yet led to a noticeable increase in the proportion of reusable packaging in the catering sector. In 2023, this was only 1.6 percent. A successful packaging turnaround in out-of-home consumption requires a dual strategy for politics and the food service industry.
The impulse paper for policymakers and the recommendations for action for restaurateurs from the REPAID research project explain which measures are recommended in order to successfully implement reusable packaging in the food service sector. This paper explains the background to these recommendations and shows how the two strategies complement each other.
