China’s economic rise has come along with huge environmental problems. Since the country is not able to solve these problems alone, the Chinese market for environmental goods and services offers great opportunities for export-oriented German companies of the environmental sector. Against this background, opportunities and risks of exporting water-related services to China has been examined in this study. It shows that in order to be successful in the Chinese market it is necessary to combine technological know-how with environmental services to innovative solutions for ecological problems. The ability to generate and implement such integrative concepts will become a decisive competitive advantage in the Chinese water sector.
