Produkte länger und intensiver nutzen – das Beispiel Wintersport

Within the research project „New Concepts of Product Use“ the IÖW has analysed the environmental benefits, implementation barriers and development options of strategies for useful life extension and use intensification. Empirically the study is based on a representative consumer survey and two in-depth studies in the fields of washing and winter sports. This publication refers on the results of the in-depth study of winter sports. Since the late 1980s, the rent of skis and snowboards has evolved into a highly modern and qualitative service, which is particularly due to the establishment of central franchise systems. This case does not only constitute an example for the economic usefulness of service orientated alternatives to the purchase of products. By comparing rent and ownership of skis in an ecological sense it is also possible to draw the conclusion, that the use of rented material is preferable to the use of own skis. The comprehensive examination of the winter sports market and the rent business is framed by the view on new concepts of product use in the segments of maintenance, guarantee, product immanent activities and re-use. The text closes with deliberations with regard to the conditions for changes in use regimes and the general possibilities of promoting the diffusion of new concepts of product use.
