Single-use systems are still the more convenient solution for all parties involved in out-of-home consumption. This article takes stock of the barriers that stand in the way of the transition from single-use to reusable systems in the catering industry. Based on the transition management approach, seven clusters of barriers are identified to help understand current usage patterns. Overcoming them requires the interaction of various stakeholders: Politics, civil society, companies and consumers. This article analyses possible microeconomic interventions at the interface between the catering industry and private consumers; these are compiled from a literature analysis. From this, some interventions can be derived that can contribute to a transition.
