Reusable takeaway packaging – a benefit for the gastronomy and the environment
In Germany, the law for offering reusable packaging (Mehrwegangebotspflicht) came into force at the beginning of 2023. It provides initial incentives to increase the use of reusable packaging in the to-go sector. However, the obligation to offer reusable packaging has not yet led to a noticeable increase in the proportion of reusable packaging in the gastronomy. The recommendations for action show why reusable packaging is worthwhile for restaurateurs and how customers can be motivated to use environmentally friendly reusable packaging with easy-to-implement measures.
The project team recommends the following videos for restaurateurs in which reusable packaging providers explain how to use the reusable containers: from dispensing to use and return. Important topics such as reordering and returning containers and nationwide cooperation are also explained.
