Sustainability Impacts of Liberalizing Trade in Services: Assessment Methodologies and Policy Responses

In this chapter the researchers investigate available examples of Sustainability Impact Assessements (SIAs) of trade in services liberalization. They summarize empirical findings focusing on three specific service sectors (environmental services, tourism and transport services). The case studies show that the extent to which trade in services liberalization can boost or hamper the development process (in the direction of the UN Millennium Development Goals) strongly depends on domestic regulatory capacities. This conclusion corroborates and even reinforces similar conclusions established for trade in goods in an earlier chapter.
