Towards more sustainable packaging A guide for businesses

Companies have various options to improve product packaging ecologically: they can reduce the weight of the packaging, choose alternative materials and design, and switch to a reusable or no packaging at all. The first part of the guide presents these measures. Their advantages and disadvantages depend on the context and should be evaluated for each product to be packaged. 

Based on cooperation with retailers and environmental organisations, the second part of the guide provides assistance for decision-making and implementation of the measures. To date, few companies have a strategy for more sustainable packaging. However, such a packaging strategy allows for the definition of clear goals and measures. The guide outlines eight key steps for selecting sustainable packaging and also includes practical tips for communicating with customers and trade partners to ensure successful implementation of the suggested changes. Finally, advice is given on how companies can lobby for better political framework conditions.
