Reducing packaging Influence and regulative options for municipalities – a guide

Disposal of waste such as single-use packaging generates high costs for municipalities. The guide presents 28 measures with which they can influence packaging volumes. Municipalities can take action in many ways, not only in their own procurement: Above all, they should encourage and support businesses and citizens to use less packaging.

First, the guide explains how municipalities can develop a strategy for reducing packaging. Afterwards, the range of possible measures is introduced – from reusable systems for to-go meals to requirements in bylaws to counselling and educational work. Because many of the approaches are already being tested in various German cities, the guide contains numerous practical examples.

Suggestions for successful networking with other municipalities and relevant local actors can be found in the third part of the guide. Finally, the brochure points out how municipalities can achieve better framework conditions at the state and federal level.
