Malte Welling's research investigates how cities can be adapted to climate change and made liveable through parks, trees, gardens and green roofs. He conducts population surveys, focus groups and cost-benefit analyses.

His methodological focus is the choice experiment. He publishes articles on its further development in journals. In his PhD dissertation, he used this survey method to investigate the value of urban greenery for residents. The environmental economist heads the GartenLeistungen project.
