Future Field of Tenant Electricity Potentials of Tenant Electricity in Germany with a Focus on Citizen Energy

The potential study about tenant electricity in Germany has been conducted by a project team from the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg (UOL), innova eG as well as the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW). Over the course of the study tenant electricity projects with a special focus on citizen energy were analyzed and the current status was illustrated. The slow expansion of such projects can be explained by a number of retarding factors such as the complexity of framework conditions or missing consistency and standardization. Looking at six case studies, the study offers concrete insights into the implementation of tenant electricity projects and the obstacles during the development process.
The IÖW particularly took into account perspectives for tenant electricity by the use of blockchain technology. Through blockchain, decentralized actors such as tenants are able to organize power trading without a central organization. For this purpose, the applicability as well as advantages and disadvantages of the blockchain technology were analyzed.
