Innovations play a crucial role in advancing sustainable development. Emerging technologies, for instance, can significantly reduce CO2 emissions. However, they also come with potential risks: they may harm people and the environment, and rebound effects can undermine environmental objectives.
At the IÖW, we adopt a broad perspective on innovation. We recognize that innovative activities are not confined to research and development (R&D) in the market economy; they also thrive in the non-profit and public sectors. Beyond technical advancements, social innovations are equally impactful. These arise when new organizational models reshape social relationships, fostering socio-ecological transformation.
We draw on methodologies from technology analysis, technology assessment, and transformation and innovation research to explore the technical, social, economic, and ecological opportunities and risks associated with innovations. In doing so, we aim to support a diverse range of actors, including innovation policymakers, municipal representatives, civil society organizations, and businesses, by identifying opportunities and pathways to shape the future. Examples include promoting regional development in rural areas or designing transformation pathways for hydrogen technologies.
Our innovation research centers on the impacts, diverse directions and negotiations processes linked to socio-technical changes, with a strong focus on aligning these changes with sustainability goals. In our analysis of transformation pathways, we address critical questions about their directionality, decision-making rationales and processes, and their implications for social and environmental justice.
