Circular economy: Enchanting prospects or a myth?

The transformation towards a circular economy is being driven forward in Germany and the European Union as a central part of a sustainable development. However, its practical implementation is still in its infancy. The authors highlight four key areas that represent “breaking points” to the previous linear economy in the transition to a circular economy:

  1. digitization to improve information exchange and traceability of products,
  2. regionalization and restructuring of supply chains,
  3. overcoming obsolescence to extend product lifetimes, and
  4. promoting sharing of products and resources.

The article concludes with recommendations for action for policy, businesses and citizens.
