"Using instead of owning" Motivations and potential of web-based peer-to-peer car-sharing

This publication presents the results of an empirical study with users of peer-to-peer carsharing. Peer-to-peer carsharing is the web-based lending of private cars – a newer way of shared car use. The aim of the thesis was to explore consumer motives for peer-to-peer carsharing and to determine resulting potentials for other forms of sustainable consumption. For this purpose guided telephone interviews have been conducted with members of the German carsharing platform „Nachbarschaftsauto“. The work conceptually takes up on previous studies on alternative forms of use, which recently have gained enhanced attention under the key word „use instead of ownership“ in research and practice. They enable consumption without ownership and usually create ecological efficiency benefits through intensified use of products, e. g. an increase in resource productivity.
The thesis underlying this publication was written within the masters programme „Sustainability and Quality Management“ at Berlin School of Economics.
