While there is a strong increase in the consumption of plastic packaging, only 18 % of all plastic waste is recycled. This poses a great threat to the environment. The research project Innoredux proposes proactive and strategic organizational solutions to reduce packaging waste in the retail sector along the value chain. By developing a taxonomy of sustainability-oriented packaging improvements and applying it to the business model canvas, the project links packaging with business model innovation. The project partners from retail, NGOs and a city administration collaboratively develop, implement and evaluate diverse packaging innovations. By taking this holistic approach and looking at the whole value chain, the interventions move from single measures and shortsighted action to actual business model innovation.
