Since packaging poses an increasing burden on the environment, retailers are required to react to changing customer demands and regulations. Some retailers go one step further and tackle the growing plastic waste by actively implementing packaging and business model innovations. The project Innoredux identified the key factors for the successful implementation of these innovations. The most important internal success factors are strategy and management, profitability and product and packaging. The most important external success factors are consumers, market and economy and technology. The factors vary between different types of retailers such as zero waste retailers, companies with sustainability as a value proposition and companies with diverse customer segments.
