Cities consume enormous amounts of energy and are responsible for high emissions. Thus, they have to copntribute significantly to climate protection. A supply with renewable energies originating primarily in cities' surroundings is unrealistic as space in the urban fringe is already becoming scarce. However, cities have high potentials in the production of renewable energy but also in energy efficiency and flexibility. The Berlin Energy and Climate Protection Concept is one step towards exploiting these potentials.
