In 2011 the government coalition of Berlin agreed that Berlin is to become climate-neutral. A feasibility study, in which the IÖW already participated, showed that this target could generally be implemented. In order to, now, achieve the translation of theory into practice a Berlin Energy and Climate Protection Programm (BEK) has been developed, on behalf of the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment and led by the IÖW. The brochure “Climate-Neutral Berlin 2050” gives an overview of this work and summarizes the elaborated recommendations for a BEK. It begins with a description of the starting point and challenges as well as participation processes and procedures. Subsequently, strategies and measures in different fields of action are discussed and finally total effects of the BEK such as CO2-reductions, cost and utility effects are explained.
