Capturing the multidimensional value of urban green space

The article addresses the multidimensional ecosystem services of urban green spaces based on inter- and transdisciplinary findings from the BMBF project "GartenLeistungen" (“GardenServices”). Green spaces have a positive impact on the quality of life in cities: Parks and community gardens are places of social life, of encounter and promote sustainability and environmental education. They stabilize the microclimate and water balance, are diverse habitats and promote resource-efficient material cycles. In urban planning and policy decisions, a full appreciation of these multidimensional ecosystem services rarely takes place. The article shows how these green spaces can be evaluated and further developed as valuable ecosystems.
