The report deals with the use of product-related environmental information systems (PIS, such as life-cycle assessment) in the chemical and electronics industry. Use patterns have been analysed by means of a survey and a number of case-studies. The cluster analysis conducted on the basis of the empirical survey revealed two distinctive groups: On the one side, performance-oriented companies using PIS to improve their economical and ecological performance. On the other side, safety-oriented companies employing PIS to prevent non-compliance with legislation and to reduce liability risks. Moreover, the case-studies showed that LCA is often applied only to the core products of an enterprise. Against this background, simple performance indicators and product checklists gain importance. In any case, PIS application has to be tailored to the specific company context.
