Konferenz: 59th Tutzing Symposion

27.10.21 - 27.10.21, Online

Most consumers care about the plastic packaging problem. 85% state that the sustainability of the packaging is important to them. However, the actual purchasing behavior of consumers does not reflect their high willingness to reduce plastic packaging. Three barriers prevent consumers to choose the most sustainable option: Firstly, consumers prioritize protection, quality and convenience factors of packaging over sustainability. Secondly, there is a lack of knowledge on the actual sustainability of packaging and thirdly, contextual factors such as availability and price make choosing the most sustainable option harder. According to consumers, manufacturers and retailers are most responsible for tackling the plastic packaging issue and removing barriers.
