In the frame of the project a methodology was developed that supports ecological target setting in companies. The research is based on the empirical findings that companies have difficulties in developing ecological targets. The methodology aims at connecting emissions on the company level with local, regional and global environmental impacts such as noise, nutrification, global warming or the deletion of the ozone layer. Changes in the environmental condition over time and environmental targets (quality and response targets) can emphasize the need for environmental measures on the company level. By this the ecological effectiveness of environmental measures will be improved. Different measures are needed to support the application of the method. Especially small and medium-sized companies (SME) need such support since they don’t have the capacities to apply the method on their own. Chambers of commerce and associations could play an important role herein. Furthermore the availability of environmental data, environmental indicators and environmental targets as well as their preparation for specific target groups must be improved.
